Compact, not compromised: legendary NIKKOR optics

Compact, not compromised: legendary NIKKOR optics

The Nikon DL24-85 may be small, but its fast NIKKOR 24-85mm f/1.8-2.8 zoom lens gives you plenty of options. From group photos to candid street shots and close up portraits, you have the flexibility to shoot pretty much whatever comes your way. The large maximum aperture of f/1.8 at the wide-angle end of the zoom range makes for dynamic low-light scenes. At the telephoto end, the f/2.8 maximum aperture is ideal for detailed head-and-shoulder shots. Proven NIKKOR technology, including aspherical lens elements, extra-low-dispersion (ED) glass, and high refractive index (HRI) elements, delivers superb clarity and contrast in every area of the frame. Colour fringing and chromatic aberration are minimised, and distortion is well controlled throughout the zoom range. Nikon’s fluorine coating actively repels water, dust, and dirt, and makes it easier to clean the glass without damaging the surface.

Portability meets performance: no more regrets

Come home feeling satisfied. With the Nikon DL24-85 in your pocket, you’re free to capture Nikon-quality 20.8 MP stills in JPEG or NEF (RAW) format, and shoot 4K/UHD movies. The camera’s 1-inch backside-illuminated CX-format CMOS sensor makes the most of every pixel to sharply capture even fine details and render clean, crisp images. Low light situations are handled exceptionally well thanks to a standard ISO range of 160 to 12800. Plus the camera’s built-in ND filter reduces the amount of incoming light to enhance creative possibilities when shooting at slow shutter speeds. Nikon’s powerful new EXPEED 6A processing engine keeps you shooting images and movies at speed, and improves noise reduction when shooting at high ISOs.

Familiar control layout

Familiar control layout: effortlessly switch between premium compact and your DSLR

Much about the Nikon DL24-85 is designed to be familiar to DSLR users, including the clearly designed menus. On the camera body, the PSAM mode dial is augmented by a dedicated ±5 EV exposure compensation dial, a rotary multi-selector (with i-button), and the all-important function (fn) button. The high-resolution 1037k-dot OLED tilt touchscreen also puts vital shooting functions right where you need them. If you’re in need of a little extra light, the camera has a pop-up flash. And if you’re used to controlling aspects like focus and aperture from the lens, the DL24-85 doesn’t disappoint. A customisable control ring and a zoom ring are mounted onto the barrel of the camera’s NIKKOR lens. You can use the zoom ring to specify a start-up zoom position, and shoot at your preferred focal length the instant the camera is turned on. Settings that can be assigned to the control ring include shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance and Picture Controls. You can also use the control ring to select manual-priority AF, which lets you adjust the focus manually while shooting with AF.

Portability meets performance: no more regrets

The portable Nikon DL24-85 doesn’t leave the power of the moving image behind. The camera allows you to shoot beautifully detailed 4K/UHD movies at 30p/25p, or you can film Full HD movies. It’s possible to capture stills while filming, and a range of advanced movie functions make it simple to quickly enhance video footage in-camera. Go deeper into your scene with Slow Motion. Shoot time-lapse sequences with smooth exposure transitions. You can even speed up the action and capture a fast-forward dash through a new city with the Super-Lapse movie function. The camera offers clean HDMI out for footage shot at up to 1920×1080 pixels. Simply connect the camera to an external HDMI recorder and you can capture the footage you see on the monitor in an uncompressed format.

Shoot life, life sized. Get up close in Super Macro mode

Shoot life, life sized. Get up close in Super Macro mode

The closer you get, the more important the details. The Nikon DL24-85 boasts a Super Macro function, which enables life-sized, 1:1 magnification of small subjects. Easily accessible via the zoom control ring, this mode combines with the bright camera lens to deliver incredibly detailed images with sharp focus points and deep bokeh. For times when the shallow depth of field can make focusing tricky, the camera’s focus bracketing function, which is available during continuous shooting, can help. Choose to shoot 5, 11 or 21 frames continuously: the camera automatically shifts the focus position slightly with each frame, then instantly combines the images. And if you shoot in Super Macro mode with manual-priority AF, you can use focus peaking to emphasise the edge of the focus area in red, yellow, white or black. Whether you want to emphasise the beauty of a butterfly’s wings, or peeling paint in the evening sun, Super Macro mode unlocks a whole world of microscopic creativity.

Complete control: in-camera tools

A range of creative and practical features can accommodate both your preferred style of shooting and your creative vision. In Pre-Capture mode, the camera begins shooting when the shutter-release button is half pressed, and continues to shoot after the button has been released. You can opt to save the entire sequence or just select your favourite shots.² When it comes to reviewing images, an auto delete function streamlines the workflow process for continuous shooting. Designed to reduce the time it takes to check through sequences of shots taken at high frame rates, this function allows you to mark shots for automatic deletion if images are blurred, faces are hidden or eyes are closed. For greater creative control over your image, Picture Controls, inherited from Nikon DSLRs, let you apply and adjust suites of settings keyed to your shooting intentions. You can take complete control over sharpening, contrast, brightness, hue, and saturation when shooting stills and video.
